Industrial R & D Fellowships - Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Program Responsibility:
Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
Program Description:
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada's (NSERC) Industrial R&D Fellowships (IRDF) helps organizations hire a postdoctoral researcher for a two-year period to undertake a project (or projects) of importance to the organization and to evaluate the fellow for potential long-term employment.
Eligibility Criteria:
Fellowships may be held within the Canadian-based research facilities of any Canadian private, not-for-profit and non-governmental sector organization that NSERC has approved for participation in this program. Awards may not be held outside Canada. To participate in the NSERC Industrial R&D Fellowships Program, an organization must:
- be either federally or provincially incorporated in Canada; or not incorporated, but wholly Canadian-owned;
- possess adequate and sound financial resources;
- be engaged in R&D activities based, to a significant extent, on technology derived from the natural sciences and engineering (excluding clinical and health research);
- have a demonstrable ability to apply the results obtained from your R&D in the natural sciences and engineering;
- not be receiving government subsidies or public funds to a significant extent;
- maintain appropriate research facilities (e.g., laboratories, computing equipment) within the organization's premises;
- ensure there is adequate support and supervision at a level suitable for the awardee;
- have an established R&D program.
Funding:
NSERC's contribution towards the fellow's salary is $30,000 per year for two years. The organization supplements NSERC's contribution – this supplement should amount to at least $10,000 per year. On average, a research fellow's salary was approximately $55,500 in 2008.
Miscellaneous/Other Information:
To help you find a qualified candidate quickly, NSERC has established an inventory of pre-approved IRDF candidates. Any candidates that you nominate from this inventory are automatically eligible for an IRDF, but the reviewers will still have to evaluate and approve your specific project.
