Site Selection magazine has released its ninth annual Canada's Best Locations awards and rankings. These are based on April 2014 to March 2015 corporate end-user facility investment and job creation data from its publication's proprietary database and the magazine's own research. Toronto and Hamilton were recognized as two of Canada's top investment locations, while Ontario cities including Brampton, London, Canada's Technology Triangle (Cambridge-Kitchener-Waterloo), Mississauga, Oshawa and Windsor-Essex comprised six out of the 10 Canadian economic development groups acknowledged in the listing's honourable mention category.

Immigration attraction critical to economic growth in Hamilton

Significant 2014-2015 Hamilton projects listed by Site Selection include Darling International, National Steel Car, Oakrun Bakery, Dependable Home Tech and Sobotec. The magazine also mentions important programs and initiatives that took place at McMaster University and Mohawk College as important ingredients to the city's success in 2014. Sarah Wayland, senior project lead at Global Hamilton initiative, states that immigrant attraction plays a key role in the city's economic growth. The city's unemployment rate improved from 7.8% to 5.8% between 2010 and 2014.

Toronto continues to attract major FDI opportunities

According to Site Selection, Toronto engaged 158 FDI opportunities in 2014, helping Ontario to become the North American leader in attracting greenfield capital investment for the second straight year. Site Selection references Astek, Greenland Group China, FK Biotek and Grintex Technologies as examples of the burgeoning investment activity that continues to pour into Ontario's capital. The report also highlights a revitalized waterfront and major investments in infrastructure as legacies of the 2015 Pan Am Games, and the 200,000 students that attend the city's eight universities and colleges annually.

In addition to the magazine's annual Canada's Best Locations feature, Site Selection contains international, regional and state spotlights, industry reports and profiles of the most popular investment sites.
